The Arab-Israeli conflict is often said, not just by extremists, to be the world’s most dangerous conflict – and, accordingly, Israel is judged the world’s most belligerent country.
For example, British prime minister Tony Blair told the U.S. Congress in July 2003 that “Terrorism will not be defeated without peace in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine. Here it is that the poison is incubated. Here it is that the extremist is able to confuse in the mind of a frighteningly large number of people the case for a Palestinian state and the destruction of Israel.”
This viewpoint leads many Europeans, among others, to see Israel as the most menacing country on earth.
But is this true? It flies in the face of the well-known pattern that liberal democracies do not aggress; plus, it assumes, wrongly, that the Arab-Israeli conflict is among the most costly in terms of lives lost.
To place the Arab-Israeli fatalities in their proper context, one of the two co-authors, Gunnar Heinsohn, has compiled statistics to rank conflicts since 1950 by the number of human deaths incurred. Note how far down the list is the entry in bold type.

This grisly inventory finds the total number of deaths in conflicts since 1950 numbering about 85,000,000. Of that sum, the deaths in the Arab-Israeli conflict since 1950 include 32,000 deaths due to Arab state attacks and 19,000 due to Palestinian attacks, or 51,000 in all. Arabs make up roughly 35,000 of these dead and Jewish Israelis make up 16,000.
These figures mean that deaths Arab-Israeli fighting since 1950 amount to just 0.06 percent of the total number of deaths in all conflicts in that period. More graphically, only 1 out of about 1,700 persons killed in conflicts since 1950 has died due to Arab-Israeli fighting.
(Adding the 11,000 killed in the Israeli war of independence, 1947-49, made up of 5,000 Arabs and 6,000 Israeli Jews, does not significantly alter these figures.)
In a different perspective, some 11,000,000 Muslims have been violently killed since 1948, of which 35,000, or 0.3 percent, died during the sixty years of fighting Israel, or just 1 out of every 315 Muslim fatalities. In contrast, over 90 percent of the 11 million who perished were killed by fellow Muslims.
Comments: (1) Despite the relative non-lethality of the Arab-Israeli conflict, its renown, notoriety, complexity, and diplomatic centrality will probably give it continued out-sized importance in the global imagination. And Israel’s reputation will continue to pay the price. (2) Still, it helps to point out the 1-in-1,700 statistic as a corrective, in the hope that one day, this reality will register, permitting the Arab-Israeli conflict to subside to its rightful, lesser place in world politics.

        I think you are missing the main point professor Heinsohn makes here. With his groundbreaking book “Söhne und Weltmacht” he argues that it is demographics and a surplus of young men that lead to great conflicts. Religion is not the motor, it may function as an excuse but is interchangeable for other excuses to justify the violence.

        We’re not missing any points. It’s very typical for people from the West to have absolutely no understanding whatsoever of foreign cultures that are dominated by religion, because religion never has that kind of stronghold on an entire society in the West. The West refuses to accept that it’s possible or that people would be living to live, indoctrinated to religion. But you can teach children anything if you’re just persistent enough. A thousand times over we hear a terrorist describe his motivation to be Allah and the Koran, no matter what country or background they are from. So why do people in the West refuse to listen to that explanation? They basically give no credence to the Muslim explanation at all. So when you explain to a Westerner that a woman is covered in a sack, not because of choice, because she would face beatings and rape, they refuse to accept the argument and still insist she should have “the right” to be beaten and raped. There is just no grasp at all of reality.
        Terrorism has never even once had a break for 1,400 years. Not once. It has nothing whatsoever to do with intervention in Iraq, Libya, etc. These events will of course do nothing to diminsh it but its not the cause of it.
        Young men are indoctrinated by old men who adhere to the “scholarly understanding” of Islam. They follow commands. The only thing that separates these two groups is that aggression and energy is greater in a young person. The core cause to terrorism is Islam and to being brought up to believe you are doing your highest duty to a God by killing other people, merely for them not being Muslims. It’s great honor and pride to the parents to have a martyr as a son. The West is annoyingly stupid on this issue. Even Muslim socieities know Islam is the problem, but they are careful to openly express it although some have indeed tried.
        As Ayan Hirsi Ali said, “What comes packaged in a compassionate language of acceptance [in the West] is really a cruel form of racism. And it is all the more cruel because it is expressed in sugary words of virtue.”

    The stats for Israel might be accurate . . . I don’t know . . . but this list only shows 75,000 dead in Iraq since 2003?!?!? That is purely idiotic!! The most reputable studies I followed has the number at more than 1,000,000 . . . which is much more realistic considering we bombed the living shit out of that country, and considering there has been no peace since we wrongfully invaded Iraq. This makes me question this entire list.

      We did NOT “bomb the shit out of” Iraq, Kemo Sabe. We used laser-guided bombs and only targeted armed insurgents, who were engaged in endangering the population by conducting operations without uniforms. They forfeited their Geneva protections because of that vile practice, too.
      I don’t accept reports of “reputable studies” for proof of diddly-squat, and you only prove your own bias by proffering them.
      Hot tip: so-called “journalists” and other agenda-driven ne’er-do-wells have a bad habit of using manufactured statistics to support their failed narratives.
      They often included deaths at the hands of Al-qaeda’s minions as worthy of inclusion in metrics supposed to be caused by our troops, as well as those of our allies (the Iraqi ARMY, remember?).
      As for your despicable analysis about our motives and justifications, try taking the pulse of the Iraqi citizens. Frankly, I think the last thing you’d do is actually read any of their BLOGS that magically appeared after Saddam went underground.

    Never in the worlds’ history of any other “religion” except Islam, has any official position and its ‘mission’ of its teachings been to “Kill all of those who do not believe as we do”. Islam has 73 different sects, they hate and kill each other and they all make war upon one another because: “They do not believe as we do”. Islamic sects are not simply “denominations,” if that word is understood to mean various valid approaches to the same religion. Members of one Islamic group do not usually recognize members of other groups as fellow Moslems, and open conflict between sects is not uncommon. Islam has been at war with itself and the entire world since its founder Mohammad started it.
    Is this why it is called “The ‘religion’ of Peace”?
    Shi’ites make up the second largest sect in Islam after the Sunni – Islam has more than 70 different sects with each claiming they are the CORRECT one.
    They hate and kill and make war on EACH OTHER!
    Are we ready for this kind of thinking in the west? Because this is what Sharia law will bring to us!

    There are 520 violent Quran verses, 150 sword verses on HOW to kill, 100 Jihad verses on justification for killing non-Moslems and how to treat infidels, as an inferior and as an enemy that must submit, be subjugated or killed.
    The Koran uses the term “Jihad” 41 times for killing Infidels and calls 14 times, for the enslavement of non-Moslems, and 3 times for killing the unbelievers wherever they are found.

Moslems are also specifically called to emulate Mohammed’s criminally depraved moral character (Quran, Surah 33:21).

    In contrast, the nine Christian Crusades saw a death toll of over 1.5 million people in the name of religion. Considering the world population was significantly less than what it is in the 21st century, this would equate to 7.5 million in today’s figures.
    Over half a million people died during the USA’s terrorist actions against the nation of Vietnam. Almost 200,000 people have died in the recent Iraq conflict and over 15,000 civilians have been murdered by US & allied forces in Afghanistan.
