Jews and gentiles alike came together on April 24 and 25 in San Remo, Italy to both commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the 1920 San Remo Conference, and examine its legal significance.
Since 1920, the San Remo Resolution, which restored hope to a persecuted people and attributed honour to its participants, has seemingly escaped the collective memory of the nations of the world.
The intent for the recently held 90th anniversary commemoration, then, was to disseminate global awarenessof Israel’s legal international rights to political leaders worldwide.
On December 1, 2009, Canadians for Israel’s Legal Rights (CILR), based in Toronto and chaired by Goldi Steiner, had organized a presentation focusing on the legal rights of Israel and its position in the current Middle East peace process. Its intent was to raise awareness.
The formal commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the San Remo Conference that ran from April 24 to 25 was organized by the
European Coalition for Israel (ECI) in collaboration with CILR.
Participants in the commemorative conference were primarily from Europe (UK, Italy, Germany, Finland, France, Belgium), with a noteworthy contingent of North American Jews, as well as the Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, MK Danny Danon and his wife Talia.
Unfortunately, the Jewish people’s legal rights to their homeland continue to be subjected to insistent political challenges from the international community together with a hostile mainstream media.
Tomas Sandellof ECI stated the following at the event’s closing: “At a time when even the core existence of Israel as a Jewish state is being challenged by its enemies it is of vital importance that we take a closer look at international law.”
Steiner of CILR optimistically expects that the recent San Remo event will “mark a turning point in the public perception of Israel and its rightful claim to the land.”
It is the hope of those who attended the commemorative ceremony, that this awareness be maintained.
